History of The Morton Foundation
Friends and associates of Robert J.G. Morton established the Morton Foundation in 1998. Its purpose is to enhance the golf experience for youngsters in Central Ohio. The Foundation was named after Bob Morton, a retired bank executive who dedicated much of his life to the game of golf. He was recognized internationally as one of the most active proponents of the game. He personally worked continually to widen the appeal of golf. The Morton Foundation was established to continue and enhance his efforts. Mission and Goals of The Morton Foundation Our mission is to make the game of golf available to children, ages 7 to 15, by providing them with golf equipment, instruction from qualified PGA and LPGA professionals and the opportunity to actually play golf. Special emphasis is placed on those who may not be able to play due to financial circumstances. Our goal is to provide children with the many life lessons that can be learned by participating in the game of golf. While the experience focuses primarily on golf, it will also include a range of opportunities from summer jobs at golf facilities to college scholarships. Any interested child now has an opportunity to learn about golf and experience the many benefits of the game. The long term goal of the Morton Foundation is to own and operate a golf course in Central Ohio specifically for kids, and to expand to increase our reach significantly beyond the 250 children per summer we are able to reach. The Need The board members of the Morton Foundation strongly believe, primarily because of their own personal experiences, that the life lessons learned from the game of golf are invaluable. A child can learn discipline, courtesy, fairness, etiquette, character and values. While many children from middle and upper income families have the opportunity to participate in the game, those with lesser means frequently don’t have the same chance. The Morton Foundation exists primarily to serve those in Central Ohio who cannot otherwise afford to participate. Statistics indicate that this need is significant in the area. From 1990 to 1999, the number of children on welfare in Franklin County rose from 40,980 to 57,530, or a 22.9% poverty rate. In Licking County, which is adjacent to Walnut Hill Golf Course, children on welfare rose from 4,915 to 6,892 in the same time period reflecting a poverty rate of 19.7%. In the Columbus Public Schools within a 5-mile radius of Walnut Hill Golf Course, more than 60% of the students are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program.

A Children who have their own sets of clubs are encouraged to bring them, but we also have golf clubs for kids to use who don’t have their own. Q What is the schedule for the program? A Weekly sessions are held every Tuesday morning June 10 – August 12. Clinics begin at 9:00 AM (kids must be checked in at least 10 minutes prior) and lunch is typically over around 11:30 AM. There are some variances to the schedule from week to week and depending a child’s skill level. Click here (link to 11) for our calendar. Q Where is the program held? A Junior Golf Days is held at Walnut Hill Golf Course, (link to page 78) 6001 East Livingston Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43232. Q What happens when the weather is bad? A We have never had to cancel Junior Golf Days! In the one case we had of bad weather, we brought all the kids indoors and had a makeshift Rules & Etiquette session with the whole group for 30 minutes until the storm passed. Q How is the program funded? A As you might guess, kids $5 weekly fees do not even cover our costs for lunch. Individual and corporate donations, revenue generated by the Morty’s Kids Classic (link to page 9) and other fundraisers along with grants from the PGA and USGA Foundation have been the financial backbone of our programs. If you are interested in making a donation, click here (link to 5) Q Who are the instructors? A Gil Roosmann, is our Director of Instruction. Mr. Roosmann oversees instruction provided in the clinics by local PGA and LPGA professionals. Volunteers (link to page 72) assist golf pros in the clinics and provide supervision to groups playing the course. Q Who is Morty? A Morty was Robert J.G. Morton a retired bank executive who dedicated much of his life to the game of golf. He was recognized internationally as one of the most active proponents of the game. He personally worked continually to widen the appeal of golf. The Morton Foundation was established to continue and enhance his efforts. Morty passed away in the spring of 2005, but his spirit lives on in the program. Q Is there a way for adults to be involved? A YES! A program of this size and nature requires many volunteer hours. Parents, grandparents, retirees, older siblings, and school teachers who volunteer in the clinics, on the course, at check-in or as outing chaperones make our program run smoothly. Some volunteer positions require golf experience and others don’t, so we can find something for you to do regardless of your golf background. Click here (link to 74) to learn more about volunteering or here (link to 72) to register. 8 In the spring of 2007, the Morton Foundation added a new junior golf program called Morty’s Kids @ OSU. This program represents a unique partnership with Ohio State’s Professional Golf Management Program. Under the supervision of our Director of Instruction, PGA Professional Gil Roosmann, PGM students develop the curriculum and provide the instruction for this 8-week after-school program. While there are similarities between this program and Morty’s Kids Junior Golf Days, unlike the summer program, it is by invitation only. Participants from the previous summer’s Morty’s Kids Junior Golf Days are invited to attend based on their skill level, attendance record and age. Registration is limited to 20 kids and the aim is to provide a much more focused learning environment with a greater opportunity for individual interaction. This, in turn, gives kid’s skills a jump start going into the summer program. The first sessions are held in Ohio State’s RPAC facility (link to http://www.recsports.osu.edu/locations_map.asp) which offers both classrooms and an indoor putting green and hitting stations. As the weather warms up, the remaining sessions are held at The Ohio State University Golf Club (link to: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/fls/17300/golfcourse/index.html). The final week consists of several skill contests, a cookout and awards. For those enrolled in Morty’s Kids @ OSU, attendance is mandatory for at least 6 of the 8 sessions. Sessions begin promptly at 4:30 and everyone is expected to be checked in and ready for class at that time. Because golf attire is strictly enforced, each child will receive a golf shirt at the first session to wear each week. A $40 fee for the program is due at registration, and financial aid (link to is available. In our first season, nineteen kids and fifteen PGM students participated. Rave reviews for the program were heard from every direction: children, parents, and the university. Due to the positive response and visible results, we plan to continue this program for many years. Morty’s Kids Classic will be held this year on Tuesday, August 19 at Pinnacle Golf Course (link to http://www.pinnaclegc.com/). Central Ohio’s newest private golf experience, this championship caliber course offers a unique challenge for players of all levels. Designed by PGA and Champions Tour winner Lanny Wadkins, Pinnacle offers natural elevation changes unique to Central Ohio and tests the golfer’s ability to use every club in the bag. All proceeds from Morty’s Kids Classic go to support the junior golf programs conducted by the Morton Foundation. Morty’s Kids Junior Golf Days is a ten-week golf program for 7-15 year olds held each summer at Walnut Hill Golf Course. The program includes skill instruction from PGA golf professionals from clubs and courses throughout Central Ohio. To date, more than 1,100 Central Ohio youth have participated in this program and interest continues to grow. Morty’s Kids at The Ohio State University our newest program. This after-school program represents a unique partnership between the Morton Foundation and OSU Professional Golf Management program. Under the direction and supervision of PGA professionals, PGM students provide instruction for twenty 10-15 year olds. This program is by invitation only and is designed for previous participants in Morty’s Kids Junior Golf Days who would benefit most from additional one-on-one instruction. In each of these programs, children are introduced to the game of golf, learn the rules and etiquette of the game, and hone their golf skills. IN addition to enhancing physical skills, golfers learn discipline, courtesy, fairness, etiquette, ethics, character, and values through their interactions. As their skills are developed they have an opportunity to play nine holes of golf as part of the program. A nominal fee of $5 is charged for each weekly session and scholarships are provided for those who cannot afford the fee. The Morton Foundation also provides golf clubs for those who do not have them and several field trips to golf events are offered at no charge. Many golfers have made life-long friendships and business associations on the golf course. We hope you will join the Morton Foundation in making these same opportunities available to Center Ohio youngsters who might not otherwise be exposed to golf and its valuable life lessons. A variety of sponsorships (link to 91) and auction items (link to 92) are available for you to consider. 11 (I’d like to have this stuff in a calendar format if possible rather than a list – we only need April – August right now. We believe it is important for you to understand our goals and expectations so you can effectively partner with us. What we expect from the kids [kids will sign a creed during the first rules and etiquette session] 1. Orderly behavior – this includes no running, foul language, fighting or disruptive behavior, abiding by the rules of etiquette, waiting for the proper time to hit the ball, and patience in the lunch line. 2. Respect for adults and other kids (we are asking kids to refer to adults as Mr./Ms./Mrs. and adult nametags will reflect this) 3. Prompt arrival every morning (a big part of the responsibility for this lies with parents!) 4. A positive attitude 5. Follow the rules of the game and listen to instructors 6. Responsibility for their actions – keeping correct score, raking bunkers, fixing ball marks, disposing properly of all trash, etc. Some Background The Morton Foundation was founded in 1998 by a group of business and community leaders who have benefited greatly from their experiences in golf. They had a desire to provide this same opportunity to kids in Central Ohio, regardless of their financial means. The Morton Foundation was named in honor of Robert J.G. “Morty” Morton. Morty was an avid golfer and the in first summers of the program, he would stop by nearly every week to watch the kids and encourage them. Morty passed away in the spring of 2005, but his spirit lives on in this program. The Program Upon arrival each week, kids check in at the desk, pay their $5, get their lunch ticket, and have their name badge punched (with the corresponding week to record attendance). Name badges are color-coded in groupings by date of birth. In general, purple = 7-8 year olds; yellow = 9-10 year olds; green = 11-12 year olds; and blue = 13-15 year olds. Children are responsible to bring their name badge with them to Morty’s Kids every week – it is important because it not only has their name, but it identifies their color group and tracks their attendance and skill level. If it is lost, please let us know so we can make a new one. Evaluations ALL KIDS will be evaluated on the first day (regardless if they’ve been in the program before). Golf Professionals will perform each evaluation and kids will be scored in five areas: putting, basics (posture, grip, aim), mini swing, full swing, and rules & etiquette. Each color group will have a designated adult leader that will take them through each evaluation station. At the completion of the evaluation, points are totaled and kids will receive up to four letters (G-O-L-F) on their name badge. These letters indicate their skill level and their goal is to receive new letters at subsequent evaluations until they have all 4 letters. When their letters spell GOLF, they have reached players club level and are exempt from further evaluations for the season. Every effort will be made to evaluate the kids consistently and fairly. If there is a dispute about a score or a child feels they have been evaluated unfairly, the child/parent should present their case to Carla and/or Gil who will handle it from there. If a child simply does not LIKE their evaluation score, they will not be allowed to redo it. For those children who aren’t able to attend the 1st evaluation on Week 1, they will be asked to arrive at a special time on Week 2 for their evaluation (and likewise for Week 3 if they missed Weeks 1 and 2). The 2nd evaluation will take place on Week 4 and the 3rd evaluation on Week 7. There will be no alternate evaluations if a child misses the 2nd or 3rd evaluation week as scheduled. We have learned that evaluations are extremely important to your children… they are anxious to improve and reach players club level. Please make a special effort to bring them to each evaluation, particularly the 2nd and 3rd, because they will not have a chance to make up the evaluation if it is missed. Players Club Players Club members arrive earlier than the rest of the kids, check in between 7:30 – 7:50 each week, have a 15-20 minute specialty clinic and then play in a foursome on-course. After an evaluation, if a child makes Players Club he/she will receive a letter in the mail from Gil congratulating them and outlining the privileges and responsibilities of that level. Not only do they have to arrive earlier than everyone else, if they are late, they will not be allowed to play on course that day. Additionally, they must call Walnut Hill on Sunday or Monday of each week to set up their “tee time” for Tuesday, if they fail to do so, they don’t get to play on course that day and go with their color (age) group to the clinics instead. Children are told that if they fail to behave properly on the course (this includes cheating, disregarding the rules and etiquette of the game, or being disrespectful of other players) their Players Club status can be taken away. Clinics In a “normal” week (except the 1st week and tournament week), there will be 5 groups of kids: Players Club (regardless of color group), blue group, green group, yellow group, and purple group. All kids in color groups will be directed to a clinic station at the beginning of the day, and they will go to a different clinic station in the 2nd hour. A clinic schedule has been developed so that each group will rotate through each station and work on different skills from week to week. Golf professionals will provide instruction in each of these clinics with assistance from volunteers. Registration and Check-In Desk Weekly check-in for all kids in clinics is open 8:00 – 8:45 AM. The first hour of clinics begins at 9:00 AM. Kids are strongly encouraged and expected to be checked in and ready to go at that time. Groups rotate to a different clinic at 10:00 AM. At 11:15 AM (or soon after), lunch will be served. Program registration is limited to 250 kids each year, and registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis. After 250 spots have been filled, the additional registrations go on a waiting list. No one is allowed to register on-site (mainly because the spots are filled long before). If a registered child does not show up any of the first 3 weeks, they will receive a phone call reminding them of the program and asking if they plan to continue. If they decide not to continue for any reason, the first child on the waiting list will then have an opportunity to register. Because of the limited registration, most children and parents understand that it is a privilege to be in the program and feel special to have a spot. While this program is not school with required attendance at each session, please know that the more sessions attended, the more your child will benefit. When you filled out your child’s registration form, you indicated the days they would attend. If you see that any of those days will change, please let us know. You can inform the volunteers at the check-in desk, or simply email or call our office (link to 6). There are many kids who would like to be in the program… your child got a spot, so we encourage you to make the most of it! Observers Because of the limited registration, most children (and parents) understand that it is a privilege to be in the program and feel special to have a spot. We have not had many problems in the past with kids bringing guests – but in case it comes up and a child brings a guest, the guest is welcome to sit to the side and watch, but not participate. We want to give our attention to the kids who are in the program and have made the effort to register in advance. Particularly in the early weeks, some parents wish to stay and observe their children in the clinics. While we do encourage parents to volunteer if they are going to be on-site, we will permit them to observe from designated areas where they can be unobtrusive. Children are not allowed to leave the clinics to sit with their parents and we do ask that non-volunteer parents allow and encourage their children to participate fully in the clinics. Special Guests Occasionally, Morton Foundation Board Members will bring business and community leaders to observe Jr. Golf Days. Channel 10 usually has a crew there to shoot video footage several times during the summer as well. In addition, we sometimes have a special guest, usually around lunch time. In the past, special guests have included musician Arnett Howard, race cars from Jeg’s, animals from the Columbus Zoo, Kevin the Magician, Archie Griffin, Columbus firefighters and police officers, a golf course groundskeeper, and LPGA tour player Brandi Jackson. While these guests don’t necessarily have anything to do with golf, we find that it provides great exposure for our program and stimulation for the kids in it. Inclement Weather Fortunately, we have never had to cancel Jr. Golf Days due to bad weather. If you are concerned about the weather, please call the pro shop at Walnut Hill on Tuesday morning (645-3100). Injuries/Sickness Occasionally a child will feel sick or sustain an injury. Our volunteers have been instructed that if they witness an accident or hear a child complain of feeling unwell, they must immediately inform our program administrator, Carla Miller, of what is happening. For liability purposes, we need to check out each of these incidents and we would rather err on the side of extra caution. Carla will personally phone the parent to tell you what has happened and let you know if you need to pick up your child early. Tournament, Contests and Awards On the second to the last week of the program there is a tournament for everyone in Players Club. At the awards ceremony on the last week, trophies are given to the top five scorers in each age/color group. For the kids in clinics, there are special contests during tournament week: Closest to the Hole, Chipping Contest, Snaggy Golf Contest, and Putting Contest. Top three scorers in each category receive ribbons in the awards ceremony. There is also a Spirit of the Game Award given to five kids who, over the course of the summer, have exhibited good attitude, sportsmanship, and character. Nominations for this award are made weekly by instructors and volunteers who have interacted with your kids. As mentioned, there is an awards ceremony on the final week where the trophies and ribbons are distributed. Kids who have earned discount cards receive them on that day and anyone who attended at least 7 sessions during the summer gets a certificate of achievement. Additional Opportunities In an effort to expose kids to a variety of other golf-related opportunities, we offer several outings. All outings are listed on the kids’ registration forms under “Additional Opportunities” and if you indicated an interest in any of the opportunities, you received a registration form, waiver, and complete details for each event. Outings are generally limited to about 40 people, registrations are totally free to you but they are first come, first served. There are several other opportunities listed for a fee. There are also incentives that Morty’s Kids can earn. One is a golf shirt following completion of four sessions. At the end of the season, any Players Club member who completed at least 5 sessions gets a discount card for course play at any Columbus Municipal Golf Course. The Morton Foundation has made special arrangements with Walnut Hill Golf Course for discounts on range balls… your child simply has to present their 2008 Morty’s Kids namebadge at the pro shop and they will be able to get a bucket of range balls for $1. Based on the tournament scores, top scorers from each age group are invited to go on a special golf outing to a private club. In addition to the top scorers, there are approximately 16 other kids who are also invited based on their performance over the entire summer. This is a very special opportunity at no charge to you. We need volunteers for this outing as well – one adult to drive the cart and supervise each foursome. Following the round of golf, everyone will be treated to lunch at the club before bussing back to Walnut Hill. Dress Code While there is no strict dress code enforced during Junior Golf Days, we do encourage kids to wear golf attire if they have it (collared shirts, Bermuda shorts). If your child has earned their Morty’s Kids golf shirt, we encourage them to wear it. Golf shoes or tennis shoes are required. Volunteers assist as needed in the clinics, on-course, and with weekly check-in. All volunteers, pros, board members, and staff will be wearing blue golf shirts and name badges. If you or your child have any questions, ask one of these people. If the person you ask doesn’t know the answer, they will direct you to someone who can help. ONLY volunteers and pros will be allowed to drive the golf carts – no children or non-volunteer parents behind the wheel under any circumstances! If you are interested in volunteering, particularly if you have knowledge of the game of golf, we encourage you to do so. Even if you have never been exposed to golf before, there are still ways you can volunteer. Please contact Carla (link to email) if you are interested in getting involved. 2008 Morty’s Kids Calendar May 1 Program Registration opens June 3 Parent Orientation (6:00 PM) and Volunteer Orientation (6:45 PM) June 10 Jr. Golf Days (1st Evaluation) June 17 Jr. Golf Days June 24 Jr. Golf Days July 1 Jr. Golf Days (2nd Evaluation) July 8 Jr. Golf Days July 15 Jr. Golf Days July 22 Jr. Golf Days (3rd Evaluation) July 29 Jr. Golf Days August 5 Jr. Golf Days (Tournament) August 12 Jr. Golf Days (Awards) TBD Golf Outing to a private club by invitation only (9:00 AM) TBD Volunteer Cocktail Party Important Numbers to Know The Morton Foundation (Carla Miller) 253 East Livingston Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43206 Phone: (614)443-6847 Fax: (614)443-6400 Email: mortyskids@garretthospitality.com Walnut Hill Golf Course (Fran Kocsis) 6001 East Livingston Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43232 Phone: (614)645-3100 Gil Roosmann, Director of Instruction Phone: (614)561-7056 74 We make every effort to be consistent with the kids in our program. Weekly Check-In Weekly check-in for all kids in clinics is open 8:00 – 8:45 AM. The first hour of clinics begins at 9:00 AM. Kids are strongly encouraged and expected to be checked in and ready to go at that time. Groups rotate to a different clinic at 10:00 AM. At 11:15 AM (or soon after), lunch will be served. Volunteers (usually the same people who assist with check-in) will assist the caterer with serving food and drinks. Upon arrival the first week, each child will check in, pay their $5 and will receive their lunch ticket and a color-coded name badge. The colors are groupings by date of birth. In general, purple = 7-8 year olds; yellow = 9-10 year olds; green = 11-12 year olds; and blue = 13-15 year olds. In subsequent weeks, kids check in, pay their $5, get their lunch ticket, and have their name badge punched (with the corresponding week to record attendance). Evaluations ALL KIDS will be evaluated on the first day (regardless if they’ve been in the program before). Each color group will be assigned an adult leader who will accompany the group throughout the morning. Every 30-40 minutes, the color groups will rotate to the next evaluation station. At their first evaluation station, the adult leader will hand out evaluation cards to every kid (they are pre-labeled with names and color-coded) – the pros will fill them out while performing the evaluation and the child will then carry the card to the next station, until their evaluation is complete. At that point, they will turn in their card at a designated volunteer desk where their points will be totaled and they will receive letters (G-O-L-F) on their name badge. These letters indicate their skill level and their goal is to receive new letters at subsequent evaluations until they have all 4 letters. When their letters spell GOLF, they have reached players club level and are exempt from further evaluations for the season. Golf professionals will be responsible for performing all evaluations. Volunteers will assist the pros as needed by keeping the kids in order, handing out evaluation cards, etc. Volunteers will also assist with collecting evaluation cards when they are completed, totaling the scores, and affixing the earned letters to the child’s name badge. Every effort will be made to evaluate the kids consistently and fairly. If there is a dispute about a score, send the child/parent to Carla and/or Gil who will handle it from there. For those children who aren’t able to attend their 1st evaluation on Week 1, they will be asked to arrive early on Week 2 for their 1st evaluation (and likewise for Week 3 if they missed Weeks 1 and 2). The 2nd evaluation will take place on Week 4 and the 3rd evaluation on Week 7. If a child misses the 2nd or 3rd evaluation week as scheduled, they will not get to make it up. If a child simply does not LIKE their evaluation score, they will not be allowed to redo it. If a child feels they have been evaluated unfairly, they should see Gil Roosmann, our Director of Instruction. Players Club Players Club kids arrive earlier each morning than the rest of the kids, check in at the registration tables between 7:30 – 7:50 each week, have a 15-20 minute specialty clinic and then play in a foursome on-course. After an evaluation, if a kid makes Players Club he/she will receive a letter in the mail from Gil congratulating them and outlining the privileges and responsibilities of that level. Not only do they have to arrive earlier than everyone else, if they are late, they don’t get to play on course that day. They must call Walnut Hill on Sunday or Monday of each week to set up their “tee time” for Tuesday, if they failed to do so, they don’t get to play on course and go with their color (age) group to the clinics that day. They are told that if they fail to behave properly on the course (this includes cheating, disregarding the rules and etiquette of the game, or being disrespectful of other players) their Players Club status can be revoked. Clinics In a “normal” week (except the 1st week and tournament week), there will be 5 groups of kids: Players Club (regardless of color group), blue group, green group, yellow group, and purple group. All kids in color groups will be directed to a clinic station at the beginning of the day, they will rotate to a different clinic station in the 2nd hour. A clinic schedule has been developed so that each group will rotate through and work on different skills from week to week. We will post this schedule each week so you will know where kids need to be. Each clinic area will also be marked with color-coded signs. Lunch All pros and volunteers will receive lunch tickets at no charge. If you do not wish to use your lunch ticket, return it to Carla – please do not give it to a child. If you encounter a child who says they have lost their lunch ticket, bring them to Carla and they will get a new ticket. We will not turn any child away from lunch, but there are also those who think they can outsmart the system and eat 4 or 5 lunches and having one ticket-keeper helps to control that. Special Guests Occasionally, Morton Foundation Board Members will bring business and community leaders to observe Jr. Golf Days. Channel 10 usually has a crew there to shoot video footage several times during the summer. Make an effort to be especially nice to these people J. Injuries/Sickness Occasionally a child will feel ill or sustain an injury. If you witness an accident or hear a child complain of feeling unwell, please notify Carla immediately of what is happening and if possible, BRING THAT CHILD to the pro shop. For liability purposes, we need to check out each of these incidents and we would rather err on the side of extra caution. Tournament, Contests and Awards On the second to the last week of the program there is a tournament for everyone in Players Club. It is particularly important on that day to have an adult (non-parent) with each foursome to supervise play and scoring. At the awards ceremony on the last week, trophies are given to the top 5 scorers in each age/color group. For the kids in clinics, there are special contests during tournament week: Proximity, Chipping, Snaggy Golf, and Putting. Top 3 scorers in each color group and category receive ribbons in the awards ceremony. There is also a Spirit of the Game Award given to kids who, over the course of the summer, have exhibited good attitude, sportsmanship, and character. Volunteers and instructors observe behavior each week and nominate outstanding kids to receive this award. Nomination forms are available at Volunteer/Pro Check-In. The 5 kids with the most nominations at the end of the summer receive a trophy. For these events we meet at Walnut Hill and board a coach that takes us to the event. While on board (or at the event) we provide drinks, snacks and/or a meal for everyone in the group. These outings are listed on the kids’ registration forms under “Additional Opportunities” and if they indicated an interest in any of the opportunities, they receive a registration form, waiver, and complete details for each event they check. These outings are typically limited to 40 people, registrations are totally free but they are first come, first served. Along with those outings, there other opportunities listed for a fee, for example: Parent/Child golfing duos, golf league for 9-13 year olds, and Parent/Child Fun Day. The Morton Foundation also offers a discount to Morty’s Kids on the Columbus Municipal Golf pass to Players Club members. There are also incentives that Morty’s Kids can earn. One is a golf shirt following completion of four sessions. The Morton Foundation has made special arrangements with Walnut Hill for discounts on range balls… children simply have to present their Morty’s Kids namebadge at the pro shop and they will be able to purchase a bucket of range balls for $1. Any Players Club member who completed at least 5 sessions gets a discount card for course play at any Columbus Municipal Golf Course. Based on the tournament scores, top scorers from each age group are invited to go on a special golf outing to a private club. In addition to the top scorers, there are 16 other kids (for a total of 36) who are also invited based on their performance over the entire summer. We need volunteers for this outing as well – one adult to drive the cart and supervise each foursome. Following the round of golf, everyone will be treated to lunch at the club before bussing back to Walnut Hill. Volunteer Specifics Volunteer Registration Like the kids, volunteers must check in at the volunteer registration desk (in the pro shop) every week. On your first week you will receive a golf shirt that you will be asked to wear each week that you come. You will also receive your lunch ticket and name badge. You are welcome to keep your name badge with you and wear it every week or you can turn it back in to the registration desk at the end of the day and we will hold it for you until the following week. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and every volunteer must sign the consent and waiver. If you have not done so already, you will be asked to on your first day. Coffee, juice and pastries are available to pros and volunteers in the volunteer registration area each morning. Volunteer Incentives This year, we have some volunteer incentives. If you volunteer at least 5 weeks during the summer, you’ll receive a coupon good for a free round of golf at Walnut Hill (9 holes). If you volunteer all 10 weeks, you’ll receive a free round of golf at Turnberry (18 holes). In addition, at the end of the season, we have a cocktail party that you will be invited to. Attire We encourage the kids in our program to wear proper golf attire, so we ask that volunteers model this by wearing proper golf attire themselves. We provide collared golf shirts to all volunteers & staff and ask that you pair this with khaki shorts/pants/capris (no denim please). Volunteer Identification When you are “on-duty” as a volunteer you are expected to wear your blue Morty’s Kids shirt and name badge. This will be your identification to the kids, staff, parent, and other volunteers. We are asking kids to refer to adults as Mr./Ms./Mrs. and your name badge will reflect this. Foursome Mentors If you are volunteering as a foursome mentor, please be checked in and ready to go by 8:00 AM. There is a specialty clinic for all members of Players Club beginning at 8:15 AM, and you are expected to attend. Immediately following the clinic, kids will be split into foursomes and play will begin on course. Volunteers ONLY will be allowed to drive the golf carts – no children or non-volunteer adults. Parents will not be allowed to supervise a foursome that their own child is in. Scorecards will be given to each kid to keep track of their scores. You should help them with this and make sure they are being honest. Kids must turn in their scorecards at Gil’s desk each week so we can track scores throughout the summer. Check-In Volunteers Check-in Volunteers should be checked in themselves at the volunteer registration desk each morning by 7:15 AM. Kids check-in opens at 7:30 AM and we count on you to be at your station, ready to go at that point. You will be working in pairs checking in kids, punching name badges to indicate their attendance, collecting their $5, giving them their lunch tickets, and directing them to the appropriate clinic area. At 9:00, when everyone has been checked in and the clinics have started, you will help to dismantle the registration area and turn in the money collected. If you need to leave at that time, you may, but we do need at least some of our check-in volunteers to stick around for lunch set-up. There are often things to do throughout the morning, particularly on evaluation days. Our check-in volunteers will be collecting the evaluation cards, totaling the evaluation scores, and putting the letters earned on the kids badges. Clinic Assistants The primary responsibility of clinic assistants is to assist the golf pros with the clinics. You are not required to have any golf experience for this job. The pros are responsible for the instruction, you are there to make sure the kids are paying attention, help to keep them engaged, take them to the bathroom, etc. When you check in at volunteer registration in the morning, you will be assigned a clinic. Introduce yourself to the pros running your clinic and help them out as needed. You will work at the same clinic area all day – and two groups of kids will rotate through your area in one day. 2008 Morty’s Kids Calendar May 1 Program Registration opens June 3 Parent Orientation (6:00 PM) and Volunteer Orientation (6:45 PM) June 10 Jr. Golf Days (1st Evaluation) June 17 Jr. Golf Days June 24 Jr. Golf Days July 1 Jr. Golf Days (2nd Evaluation) July 8 Jr. Golf Days July 15 Jr. Golf Days July 22 Jr. Golf Days (3rd Evaluation) July 29 Jr. Golf Days August 5 Jr. Golf Days (Tournament) August 12 Jr. Golf Days (Awards) TBD Golf Outing to a private club by invitation only (9:00 AM) TBD Volunteer Cocktail Party Important numbers to Know The Morton Foundation (Carla Miller) 253 East Livingston Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43206 Phone: (614)443-6847 Fax: (614)443-6400 Email: mortyskids@garretthospitality.com Walnut Hill Golf Course (Fran Kocsis) 6001 E Livingston Avenue Columbus, Ohio 43232 Phone: (614)645-3100 Gil Roosmann, Director of Instruction Phone: (614)561-7056 Again, thank you for your willingness to help out.
